The aquamanile has the roman Numerals MDCXVII - 1617 and DEVS ET LVMEN latin for God and Light There is significant difference between this and other specimens that may have surfaced and that is the handle is much more ornamental on this piece. The bottom was at one point sealed presumably during its manufacture to properly ventilate the piece when it was cast. The Aquamanile was traditionally used as a container for holy water to use during exorcisms. I do not know if this vessel was ever used during exorcisms but considering it could be 100 - 400 years old there is a fair probability. This is a very unique piece and a rare opportunity to acquire such a collectible! A similar Aquamanile can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with an earlier date materials: bronze height: 7.5" circumference: 3.5"
